Chess Tournaments

2017

January 24: Blitz Tournament at 10 minutes per player. Depending on the number of entries this will be either a Round Robin or a Swiss. Registration at 6.30 pm. Play to start at 7.00 pm. Entry fee is $5. For those players who are NOT members of the Newcastle District Chess Association an entry fee of $10 will be charged ($5 entry + $5 casual player fee).


February 11 & 12: Newcastle Open.Two day event. 6 Rounds - 3 rounds on Saturday and 3 rounds on Sunday starting at 10.30 am sharp. Time control = 1 Hour + 10 seconds Fischer. Registration from 9.30 am to 10.15am on Saturday 14th. $60 entry fee for adults and $50 for University & TAFE students, Juniors and Pension Discount. Prize money is dependant on the number of entries.Tournament Sat, February 14, 9:30am – 6:00pm
Where: Gallipoli Club, 3-5 Beaumont St, Hamilton NSW.
 

February 21: Under 1200 & Novice Tournament. 6 or 7 week competition running over consecutive Tuesday evenings depending on the number of entrants. Time control is 1 Hour + 10 seconds Fischer. Entry fee is $20. This is a NSWCA rated tournament and you must be member of the NSWCA & the NDCA to compete in this event.


April 9: Sunday One Day "Nicholson Cup Handicap & Odds" Tournament At PCYC Club, Broadmeadow. Flat entry fee is $20, juniors $10. 7 Round Swiss Tournament. 15 minutes + 5 Second Fischer. Games  will be recorded.. You have to score the game up until the 13 minute mark then you don't have to score in the last 2 minutes of the game. This event loosely follows handicap tournaments of the late 1800's where the stronger player removed some of his or her material to try and even up the game.


May 2: City of Newcastle Championship. To be played over consecutive Tuesday evenings for 6 to 7 weeks. Time Control is 1 hour + 10 secs Fischer. Entry fee is $25. Depending on the number of entries, The City of Newcastle Championship will take one the following formats.

    A round-robin for 8 players or less.
    A 6 round Swiss for 9 to 10 players.
    A 7 round Swiss for more than 11 players.
    In the unlikely event of 16 players or more, a two division tournament (8 or more players in each division dependant on the rating spread).

Whatever the format, the City of Newcastle Championship will be a RATED tournament, and to be eligible to play you MUST be a member of the Newcastle District Chess Association & the New South Wales Chess Association. Players wishing to compete who not members of these two respective Associations can join on the evening if they wish and be eligible to compete.

June 18: Sunday One Day Rapid Tournament Venue:  At PCYC Club, Broadmeadow. Register from 10.00 am. Start time:10.45 am Entry Fee(s):   $25. Time Control:   20 minutes per player - guillotine. Rounds:   7 rounds: 10.45am, 11.35am, 12.25pm, 2.00pm, 2.50pm, 3.40pm, 4.30pm

July 18: Newcastle District Blitz Play at 5 minutes per player. Depending on the number of entries this will either be a Round Robin or a Swiss. Registration at 6.30 pm. Play to start at 7.00 pm. Entry fee is $10 for NDCA members. For those players who are NOT members of the Newcastle District Chess Association an entry fee of $10 will be charged + $5 casual player fee.

July 25: Newcastle District Championship. Newcastle's toughest tournament and not for the fainthearted ...... prepare yourself for the bloodletting! To be played over consecutive Tuesday evenings for 6 to 7 weeks. Time Control is 2 hours guillotine. Entry fee is $25. Depending on the number of entries. The Newcastle District Championship will take one the following formats.

    A round-robin for 8 players or less.
    A 6 round Swiss for 9 to 10 players.
    A 7 round Swiss for more than 11 players.
In the unlikely event of 16 players or more, a two division tournament (8 or more players in each division dependant on the rating spread).

August 27: Sunday Kings Gambit Tournament at the PCYC Club, Broadmeadow. Fee $20, juniors $10. The starting position is e4, e5, f4. Whether Black accepts or declines the gambit is up to him / her.15 minutes + 5 Second Fischer. Games  will be recorded.. It is a condition of entry to the tournament that players are required to score the game up until the 13 minute mark of their time, the last 2 minutes you do not have to score. Advanced registration would be appreciated as it lets us prepare the draw. All you do is let the organisers know that you are coming and wish to participate. Just pay your entry fee on the day. For players who have not committed to pre entry, normal registration on the Sunday morning will be from 9.30am to 10.15 am. Play to start at 10.30 am.

September 26:Doug Carey Challenge - Doug Carey is the doyen of Newcastle chess. He has been playing the game for over 60 years and it was decided in 2014 to hold an event that celebrated Doug's  contribution to regional chess, both as a strong player and as an organiser. The 2015 event will follow the format from last year. The tournament is contested by teams of two players. The team members make alternate moves and collusion of any kind between team members is strictly forbidden. In addition, all games commence with the English opening (1.c4 of 1.P-QB4) since no-one can remember Doug playing any other opening in competition play. Fischer time control is employed (60 minutes + 10 seconds per move). Fee: $20/team.

November 14: Blitz Tournament at 10 minutes per player. Registration at 6.30 pm. Play to start at 7.00 pm. Entry fee is $10. For those players who are NOT members of the Newcastle District Chess Association an entry fee of $10 will be charged + $5 casual player fee.

November 28: Annual NDCA Chess Dinner & Prize Giving. Players and their spouses meet between 6 and 6.20 pm at WESTS City Newcastle, with the dinner to commence at 6.30 pm.


December 5: Annual General Meeting starting at 7 pm at Wests City.

December 19: Christmas Lightning at 5 minutes per player. Registration at 6.30 pm. play to start at 7pm. Entry fee is $10. For those players who are NOT members of the District Chess Association an entry fee of $10 will be charged + $5 casual player fee.
